IPSN coordination is funded by the Swedish Research Council.
The coordinating team behind IPSN are:
Dr Lina Mtwana Nordlund, Founding director and Project coordinator
Lina works as Associate Senior Lecturer at Uppsala University in Sweden. She is interested in transdisciplinary coastal sustainable development, with a special focus on seagrass, fisheries and ecosystem services. She has been working in the Western Indian Ocean since 2005. Learn more about Lina here.
Dr Johan Eklöf, Founding director
Associate Professor in marine biology with a general interest in community and ecosystem ecology, and a specific interest in the role of diversity in seagrass social-ecological systems. Read more about Johan here.
Dr Richard Unsworth
Richard works on ecological structuring processes within marine systems and the implications of these systems for society. This focuses primarily on the interrelationships between seagrass habitat and associated productive fauna (mainly fish). He is particularly interested in environmental changes on seagrass meadow functioning and the implications of this for ecosystem services. Richard is based at Swansea University and is a founding director of the marine conservation charity Project Seagrass.
Dr Leanne Cullen-Unsworth
Leanne is a member of the Seagrass Ecosystems Research Group and co-director of the charity Project Seagrass. Based at Cardiff University, Leanne works on seagrass as a coupled social-ecological system with a focus on fisheries and sustainability. She has worked on seagrass systems in the Indo-Pacific since 2004. Learn more about her work here.
Dr Narriman S. Jiddawi
Dr Narriman works at the Institute of Fisheries Research in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Her expertise is in fisheries management, women and gender roles in coastal ecosystems and mariculture. She has more than 20 years of experience in these fields. Learn more about Narriman here.
Dr Maricela de la Torre-Castro
Maricela de la Torre-Castro works at Stockholm University. She has a background in marine sciences as Oceanologist (Univ. Autonoma de Baja California) and is docent (Associate professor) in Natural Resource Management. Her main interest is to investigate human-nature relations. She uses seagrass social-ecological systems to address questions dealing with coastal resource use. Some examples are fisheries and other goods and services, governance, management and gender. Learn more about Maricela here.
PhD candidate Benjamin Jones
Benjamin Jones research is primarily focused on seagrass ecosystems and small-scale fisheries. His PhD project at Stockholm University investigates the linkages between biodiversity and food security using seagrass meadows as a model social-ecological system. He is a founding director of the marine conservation charity Project Seagrass. Read more about Ben here.
PhD candidate Johann Stiepani
Johann Stiepani is a transdisciplinary researcher with a focus on global change, coastal resource management, ecosystem services, and numerical ecology. His PhD project based at Uppsala Universitet will examine how humans benefit from seagrass ecosystem services. Johann has worked on coastal resource management and governance in the various countries in the Indo-Pacific. Read more about Johann here.
